Hey, gang- lots has been going on since the last time I posted, and lots coming up!
Last month a few members of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association got together for another Sat-Art-Day at 901 Comics East.
We were set up in the gaming area of the store near the bar with no name. The event is free and open to the public, and we even have art supplies you can use.
Our next event out there will be the MSCA’s Drink-N-Draw on August 14th from 6-8pm. It’s free and open to the public as well, but be sure to bring a few bucks to order something to drink and/or eat. Beer, sodas, water, pizza, and snacks are available for purchase at the bar.
We also had another monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi’s Pizza near the U of M at the first of the month, and will be back out there on August 6th which is this coming Tuesday from 6-8pm.
MSCA President Kevin L. Williams and I were recently featured on SRP Studios’ “The Real Hernando” podcast . We were invited on to talk toons with host Derrick Michaud and share some info on the MSCA, and our history and involvement with the group over the years. I walked away with recording studio envy..! You can listen to the audio version of the podcast on Spotify, Apple, or most podcasting platforms, and watch the video version on Facebook, YouTube, and on “The Real Hernando” website . Thanks to Derrick for shining a spotlight on the MSCA!
I also recorded a new “Drawing Funny” podcast episode about all the events coming up and my recent appearance on “The Real Hernando” podcast . It’s available on Apple, Spotify, and most podcasting platforms.
I have some of my art for sale at the DeSoto Arts Council, and some free “Drawing Funny” stickers and buttons available…while they last!
The DAC is on Hwy.51 in Hernando, MS near the Courthouse Square and Commerce Street- 2465 Hwy 51 S.
OPEN
Tue 10:00 AM – 4:00 pm
Thu 10:00 AM – 4:00 pm
Sat 10:00 AM – 4:00 pm
I’ll be adding more prints to the DAC once my Monsterpiece prints come in for the other shows and events. I’ve also got new stickers coming in, as well as a “Scared Silly” zine.
I have removed my sketchcards and sketchcovers from 901 Comics East, and will be going by The Cellar to pick up my art there as well.
I’ve got a few art events coming up that I’m really gonna need merch for. I hope to add new stuff there before Christmas.
You can find me and my work in person soon at the Memphis Monster Market, Crosstown Concourse Annual Record Swap & ZineFest, Memphis Monster Con, the MSCA’s “Funny Pages” art show at Germantown Community Theatre during their run of “Annie Jr.” in early December, and “The Rogues Gallery” pop-up shop at Centerpoint Games & Toys in late December.
One of my latest pieces was another sketchcard created at the latest MSCA dinners- a hand-drawn Cookie Monster card.
I started off sketching it with a pencil, then broke out my markers for the colors.
I used a variety of different markers and colors.
I did the black line art with a Pigma Micron pen, and the white highlights with a white Gelly Roll pen and a Prismacolor pencil.
Once done I lightly sprayed it with some Krylon fixative and let it dry.
At the last Sat-Art-Day I drew another Slimer sketchcard.
I started off with a yellow #2 pencil…
…then I used a variety of markers…
…some black Pigma Micron Pens…
…white Gelly Roll gel pen…
…and finished it off with a white Prismacolor pencil and some Krylon spray-fix.
I’ll have it and several others for sale at upcoming events.
Back on Juneteenth we had actress/dancer Femi “Oola” Taylor in the store for a signing appearance. I totally forgot to get a photo with her while she was in the shop!
I did draw an Oola and Salacious Crumb sketchcard for her that day. She and her husband live in Denmark, but are Elvis fans and love coming to Memphis. They were headed next to a con in Jackson, MS and then down to New Orleans. Nicki’s been to Denmark for a business trip, and it’s on our bucket list to go there together.
Going to be a busy summer and fall around here. Hope to see you around town!
