Well, gang- this year’s Monster Market is just a memory now. Nicki and I got to go check it out last Tuesday night.
It was located downtown down by the river at The Medicine Factory (85 Virginia Ave.), which is a great event space.
There was a full moon outside, and inside we were met by Monster Market’s mascot Manny Monster.
There was lots of Manny and Monster Market merch available for sale near the front, and I picked up a couple “Professional Monster” stickers that night, and had pre-ordered a plush Manny and a couple stickers online before the brick & mortar location opened up.
There was a great turnout and we even saw a few of the folks form the yoga studio downstairs shopping after class.
Even thought many pieces had sold opening weekend, lots of great spooky and fun items were still available. I was told that opening night on Friday was slammed packed with people! Glad to hear they had a great crowd, but glad I didn’t go that night…I’m not a fan of crowds these days.
After we got there I did a couple loops around to see if I could spot some of my work and local artists I knew…and I did.
I picked up a couple zines by Eric McMeans. He and Dale Martin both had zines for sale, and so did I. I also bought a Moth Man Club patch. Eric had several sketchcards for sale, too.
I also bought a Beetlejuice bib for my collection, and Nicki picked up a Beetlejuice and an AudreyII one for a co-worker’s twins.
I had several of my sketchcards, prints, stickers, buttons, and patches for sale.
I also had two framed “Scared Silly” marker illustrations at this year’s market, and had already sold one when we went by. Unfortunately I didn’t sell this one, but I’ll have it at the Memphis Monster Con in November.
Again, there was an amazing variety of art work and products to choose from.
This past Friday Nicki and I were invited to the Maker Appreciation Night to hang out with our fellow makers, have a snack and a drink, pick up our leftover stock, and get paid for our sales.
We didn’t want to be the ones to cut the Manny cake, so we each grabbed a cupcake and a drink.
We ran into our friend Matt Ryan and his son, and talked with Dale and Wendy about our final sales and other upcoming shows we’ll be attending, like Crosstown Concourse’s annual Zine Fest & Record Swap this coming Saturday.
I sold several prints (my B/W Monsterpieces did best), various stickers, some patches, a few buttons, a zine, and the one “3 Brides” marker illustration. I was really kind of surprised at what sold, and look forward to comparing sale at the Zine Fest and Memphis Monster Con.
Thanks to Lauren and the Monster Market team. Even though this pop-up shop is closed for the season now, I’ve already started making plans for next year’s Monster Market art offerings.
Hope you got a chance to check it out, and hope you can make it out to this year’s Zine Fest and Memphis Monster Con!
