Hey, gang- it’s continuing to be a busy spring and shaping up to be an even busier summer…and fall later this year!
Last night we had a great turnout for the Mid-South Cartoonists Association (MSCA) monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi’s Pizza. We get together on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm. It’s free and open to the public, and we actually had some new faces join us- including some we met at Free Comic Book Day last Saturday.
Speaking of FCBD, we had a great time out in Cordova at 901 Comics East. Nicki and I hung out with fellow MSCA members, and saw several MSCA snd SMT friends who attended the event.
I did a little bit of drawing on another Muppets sketchcard while MSCA prez Kevin L. Williams brought out his Grover replica puppet that was dressed as “Yoder“.
While talking toons and health issues with Kevin and Jason Negan, we referred to the back gallery room as “the cardiac ward“. A few years ago I survived a heart attack and had to undergo a double bypass (100% & 60% blockage and a failed heart cath attempt), Jason has a pacemaker thanks to Covid, and Kevin just recentljy survived a “Widowmaker” heart attack and a (successful) stent/heart cath proceedure for his 100% blockage. Thankfully we’re all doing well now, but the conversations quickly turn to our health these days.
After we tore down my table set up Nicki and I stopped by Comics & Collectibles on the way home. Nicki also swung by The Cellar to pick up here hold box comics (and me a cool FCBD 2024 tee), and also run a few other errands while I was set up at 901. Glad we stopped by C&Cs- I found a few variant cover comics and one Ghostbusters issue I missed at work. Saturday was also Star Wars Day – May The Fourth – so we wathced the new “Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire” animated series on Disney+. We both enjoyed it and hope they do more series.
You can hear about our FCBD adventures- and a few interviews I did on the latest episode of my “Drawing Funny” podcast (click HERE).
My next event appearance will be at the Memphis Libraries’ Comic Con on May 18th.
The FREE event will be held at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library (main library) on Poplar Avenue from 10am-3pm.
We had a great time there last year at their innaugural comic con.
Many MSCA members will be back out there again this year, as well as Muley The Mule (Kev’s puppet) and another surprise Muppet guest.
I’ll have my own table with some new prints, buttons, stickers, sketchcards, and more. Happy to sign any of my work, and do free sketches for any kids with sketchbooks.
Special comics guests this year will be Matt Wagner and Gene Ha! My wife Nicki Workman will be moderating a panel with them that afternoon.
Hope you can check it out!
